Patience and Pictures

Day 96
Back on the "Lean" Routine again, and it seems like my body forgot that it has been doing it for 90 days.  I've been super sore this week.  Yoga is still a struggle, as far as completing the whole workout at their level, but I can go deeper into my lunges and balance far longer.  I'm thankful for core synergystics too, there's no doubt in my mind it's really helped keep me from getting injured on this process.
Weigh day is coming up again, and I'm hoping for continued results.  The nutrition guide is second nature now, which is helpful.  My criticism is this though, I've been drinking too much coffee, having too little protein, and too large of servings when my wife makes her Zucchini bread.  Other than those things, I'm eating very healthy.  I'd like to see an increase in my fiber, but I don't know how that's going to help me recover from these workouts any faster.  Just trying to be patient and keep to the course, and let the results come to me.
My wife thought it would be a good idea to post a couple of the pictures we took at the end of the ninety days.  So here are a few that I wasn't too embarrassed to post.  Enjoy.

Before
This is Day Zero.  I was 299 lbs.

After
This is Day 91.  Just under 248 lbs!

More Day 90 Pictures!

This is me a little surprised that I actually completed the 90 days, and I actually beat my 40 lbs weight loss goal, by ten pounds!

Still bringin' it! Stay tuned for more results!

One Journey Ends, Another Begins

Day 90
Today was day 90.  I realize I haven't been posting much lately, and that's mostly due to my lack of discipline, but here's the long and short of it.
The last few weeks are the hardest.  You become excited about your weight loss, your fitness level, your energy, your diet, and you pat yourself on the back and start missing workouts.  (In all fairness sometimes it was 108 degrees with 80% humidity).  I sacrificed a couple days during the move, and another one or two when I got poison ivy.  If it was too hot I would find an excuse not to do it.  All in all I missed 7 workouts in the 90, but they all came in the last 3 weeks.  Regardless, I hung in there and stayed with the nutrition plan.
Final tally on weight: 248 lbs.
   That's 51 lbs lost!
I never realized, even when I first began p90x just how out of shape I was.  Sure I knew my weight was really bad, but even after losing fifty pounds, I don't feel like I'm where I need to be physically yet.  I look in the mirror and see 30lbs. or so just lying around taking up space.
Therefore I have decided to go ahead and do a second term of p90x.  I will be doing the lean again.  I lost 10 lbs more than I thought I would the first time, I'm hoping I lose 30 lbs in 3 months this time.  After this segment we'll have to see whether or not I will do another one.
Thanking God, and giving Him glory for all the grace and strength He has given me throughout this journey, and praying and praising Him for the provision to come on this new one.

Week 9, Day 5

Day 61
I forgot to weigh myself yesterday!! Ugh! Talk about focus and I missed it.  Not a huge deal though.  I took care of that little problem this morning.  And guess what my weight is.  Seriously guess...  well it's: 256.5!  That makes 42.5 pounds lost, in two months.  I can remember just swearing I'll never lose it, but it's finally happening.  Staying focused on the diet, and getting low in those lunges.
Today was a rough morning, I was feeling really discouraged after rolling over in bed and avoiding the workout.  I crawled into work 15 minutes late, and was feeling really depressed.  Been having a rough time sleeping lately (getting over a cold) and I've been really stressed about our move coming up next week.  Anyway, I got home, and pop'd the CD in right away.  "Core Synergistics." It was fitting to get back to the basics.  I can still only do about 6 of those "Prison-Cell Pushups" but everything else went ... smoothly..?  It wasn't easy, but it was fun, and ended up being a great workout.  Had an amazing sandwich for lunch, a couple power bars, and a yogurt so far today.  Probably have a small bowl of chili for dinner... but I should find somewhere to work in a fruit.  Maybe I'll cave in and make some smoothies.
No idea how much more weight I need to lose here.  I'm still not where I want to be.  But I'm really encouraged that I'm going in the direction I want to for the first time in my life.

Week 9, Day 2

Day 58
Wow it has been a really tough week for us both.  There have been some crazy living circumstances that have changed, and the planning of my wife's Birthday Party.  I managed to pull about 10 hours of sleep out of my hat over the last weekend, and I felt blessed for that.  We're in the middle of a move, and I'm recovering from a nasty throat infection.
Yesterday I was almost completely incapacitated.  I managed to get to work, put in my time, leave, meet with the Landlord, finalize our deposits and utilities, and not pass out.  But after getting home, I realized I was in really bad shape.  I canceled my appointment with my mentor that evening, and bagged my workout.
Yup, it was the first workout I missed since starting, and I have to say, I felt really bad.  But, this is real life, and I'm no Nazi.  Trying to get back on track today to start this last cycle strong.
I didn't even get around to taking my day 56 photos; guess I will have to do that today.  Weigh day is coming up, only two days away.  After a "rest week," a birthday party, and skipping a workout, I'm not that optimistic about my weight-loss, but we'll have to see.
Money has been super tight lately, and food has been bumped down the list of priority.  This means our fridge has been bone-dry over the past week.  Drinking water to fill up, stashing a handful of nuts in my mouth for "middle-meals", skipping a few meals here and there, having smaller portions, and other sacrifices have all come into play over the past week or so.

Time to Refocus
My wife spent the last 24 hours in the hospital (not as a patient, as a nurse), so she's out like a light.  I'm going to do my workout and head to the grocery store to resupply.  Food might get redundant soon (eating the same thing every day), but it will be healthy, and it will filling.
I plan to bring it hard all week.  Providing I don't get sicker!

Week 7, Day 2

Day 44
Half way!  Wow, so far it has been a real journey!  I've lost over 28 lbs. and I've got another weigh day in just 5 more days.  My body is sore, but I can see the difference now.  I'm starting to feel comfortable in my own skin.  Folks in church have been super encouraging.  But I wouldn't be where I am without the grace of God, and the love of my wife.  Thanking God for what He's doing in me, and praying He continues.
I haven't updated in a week, and I don't think anyone really missed it.  Haha.  Like I said, this is mostly for me, and saying that, the updates won't be coming as often as they originally did.
Eating is still going well.  My wife and I have been a "low-carb-wrap" kick these last couple weeks.  Really enjoying what we're eating, and staying strong.

Week 6, Day 1

Day 36
Today was Core.  And surprisingly it went really well.
Keeping up the pace, and staying on track with my diet.  I got a lot of compliments over the weekend about my weight-loss.  It really helps to hear encouragement.  I've got a new focus and drive going into the 6th week!

Week 5, Day 4 &5

Day 33
Today was Legs and Back.  Was so tough.  I ran out of energy, I barely finished the workout.  I docked about 10 minutes through and through.  Then we went on to abs and I just laid on the ground after the first three exorcises, completely crashed.
   Felt like dying
At a Cobb Salad from a local deli.  They couldn't have put more croutons on it.  A mountain of croutons, got a full workout sifting through the avocado and chicken trying to find them all.  A mountain.  Despite all that work, it was a bland salad.  I didn't feel like eating any dressing, so I don't know, it was a rough day.

Day 32
I uh... oh ya it was Yoga yesterday.  Was super tough.  I noticed I felt more flexible than I ever have.  Sweat through my whole shirt.  Skipped the darn lotus meditation pose at the end, what's with that anyway.  Wish I was thinner.  Hurt my neck a little on the stupid raise-your-legs-over-your-head-and-behind-your-neck-while-reciting-"Othello"-backwards-pose.
   Eating was just dandy.

Week 5, A Long Day 3

Day 31 - Part I
I was feeling pretty good about my weight loss, and I think it got to my head a little.  I remember once a couple of weeks back blogging about this giant steak sandwich I had for breakfast once.  Yea... I did that again today.  It was on my way to my last two final exams for the semester, and it was after my first "Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps" routine.
Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps
Since this is the first time I'm doing this, 31 days in I figured I'd discuss it a little bit.  Sure enough, it was difficult.  What made matters worse is I had a problem with my modem (for the thousandth time) and I was at wits end.  So I tried working out mad.  I thought at least this will be like that Rocky where Rock is mad at that Russian guy for killing Apollo, and my workout will be great... right? Wrong.
The workout was painful for the first 20 minutes.  Couldn't get my form right, wasn't having fun, was running out of energy, it was just a disaster.  I stopped the tape and prayed for a moment.  Then went back to it.  I'd like to think I finished the workout well, but those push-up exorcises really get to you after awhile.  The plyo-push-up is insane.  I think I did two, maybe three of those.
To make matters worse, I still wasn't feeling that much better, so I just decided to skip the Ab Ripper at the end.  Hey I'm a 'chubs mckenzie', it happens.
Part II
Anyway after the workout, I packed up some loose paper, grabbed a couple pens, let the dog out for a minute, forgot my protein bar, and left for my finals.  It was then I realized: I hadn't eaten breakfast, I was in a horrible mood, I skipped 15 minutes of the workout (Ab Ripper), and I had to take two finals in an hour.  In my mind this was a justifiable time for a steak sandwich.  Now, I laid off the cheese, the mayo, and the grilled onions, but I got pickles, lettuce, tomato, and hot peppers.  It's a great sandwich!  But seriously it's huge.
My stomach was telling me I ate too much.  So after my finals, I came home with a big smile on my face and I was determined to enjoy the summer, and to enjoy a cardio workout to burn off that sandwich.  I quickly inhaled the protein bar sitting on the counter, and grabbed a bottle of water.  Popped in the CD, and "Brought it hard for 50 minutes!"  I feel great now.  School is over for the semester, and I know I killed that sandwich after a workout like that!  I was feeling so good I even snapped a photo after the cardio!  Overall, a long (but great!) day 31.

Week 5, Day 1 & 2

Day 30
Today was Cardio.  We're back on a similar routine to weeks 1-3, for the next three weeks.  But there's a few workout replacements.  I think legs and back is gone, and instead is shoulders chest and triceps... but I'll need to double check.  That workout is tomorrow.
I felt much better today than I did yesterday.  I was able to do nearly every exorcise (at my own pace) except for one of the plyometric "jump shots."  Well, I skipped the "Dreya Rolls" again.  I really wish I could do them.  I also had to pause and let my heart rate level off before I could continue a few times.  Still, I didn't just let the workout continue while I caught my breath (which I've done in the past, and will probably do again in the future).
Food should be simple today.  I had another yogurt for breakfast and I plan to have some roasted veggies at some point.  Also, I'm going make a couple of real-fruit smoothies for my wife and I.
For consistency sake I weighed myself today.
274.5 lbs.  That's 24.5 lbs of weight lost!  Still Bringin' It!  1/3 of the way through!

Day 29
Rough day of Core exorcises.  My core strength is still minimal.  I could feel my body working hard on every exorcise though, and I was cautious to make sure I was engaging my trunk muscles and my core-band (from the chest to the thighs).  But, like I said, it was rough.  I'm getting stronger, and doing more reps of each workout, but I can hardly keep up with those guys.
Food was a switch up yesterday, because of the exams at school.  I grabbed a yogurt for breakfast, and a couple protein bars for snacks.  I had a turkey sandwich for lunch, and some lean-chili for dinner.

Week 4, Day 5 & 6

Day 27
Yoga X with the wife today.  This is still the hardest workout on the routine, and this weeks a rest week so we have to do it twice.  I'm not sure how that makes sense, other than I can see it's usefulness in all the rest of the workouts.  I made some banana-peach smoothies to reward ourselves for all the hard work.
I'm not sure what food will be like today.  I may make some roasted veggies, I may make a steak salad.  I'm not sure.  In either case, it should be okay.  Tomorrow is picture day.  That means I'm almost through 1/3 p90x!

Day 26
Missed updating yesterday I was buried in "Finals Review," even had to blow of a BBQ with a couple of dear friends.  Anyway, yesterday was Cardio X.  Was a good workout through and through.  Elevated heart rate and tough core exorcises.  Also, had to work in the morning, and my back was really sore from leaning over all day.
Food was kinda weird, I ate breakfast before work, then had a protein bar at my usual time (like 2hrs later), than a half hour later it was time for lunch, and lastly I had a few meatballs for dinner right after work (1.5 later).  Which left a protein bar for my fifth meal about 5.5-6hrs later.  Was kind of a disaster.

Week 4, Day 4

Day 25
Keep looking in the mirror asking "Am I thin yet?" and then sighing as I answer to myself "nope...not yet..."  However, I'm pressing on.  Today my wife and I did the "X Stretch" workout together.  It wasn't bad at all.  Naturally, I'm not nearly as flexible as the people in the video, and I can't do the shoulder plows (they are impossible), but I held my own and enjoyed a relaxing hour or so.
Food shouldn't be an issue today, just staying the course.

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Week 4, Day 3

Day 24
It was Kempo today, I dogged it a little on the knee ups+back kicks, but I realized this about 3/4 of the way through and picked up the pace.  Was a decent workout, but I forgot to wear my heart monitor.
For breakfast I shrugged off half the omelet I made, I just wasn't as hungry as I thought I should be.  So I picked out most of the chicken and ate a few bites of the egg-whites, and that was about it.  We're out of protein bars, so I am going to substitute my snack with celery and peanut-butter.  Not sure what's for dinner, gonna have to wing it.

Weel 4, Day 2

Day 23
We're fast approaching Picture Day, and I'm kind of anxious to see the difference between the two.  Naturally when you are as overweight as I am, you will celebrate even the slightest of changes.  I have planned for three rotations of p90x, so my heart isn't set on the 90th day photo, but rather the 270th day photo.
Today was Core, and it was tough.  I kept up for the most part, except my max reps were far less then theirs were.  Nevertheless, it was a pretty focused workout, and I only skipped a few lunges here and there.  Oh, and I skipped the Dreya Roll and the three Bonus Exorcises.  To be fair I should mention those.
Food hasn't been bad at all today.  Steak omelet, couple protein bars, and a dry turkey sandwich on pumpernickel bread.  Not exactly sure what's for dinner...
On a side note, I am still really in need of a few heavier weights, and a great pair of shoes to exorcise in.  The one resistance band we have is too much for Core, and not enough for Shoulders and Arms.  But I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Monday, May 3, 2010

Week 4, Day 1

Day 22
Well it was Yoga today, the start of a new week.  It's the recovery week, and we're finally approaching the second round of photos.  Burned over 1000 calories this morning during Yoga, I have no idea how that even happened.  Made an "all berry" smoothie this morning too, that was great.
Here's the new schedule for this week.  There will be a new regiment after this week too, as we begin phase II.
   Day 1: Yoga
   Day 2: Core Synergystics
   Day 3: Kempo
   Day 4: X Stretch
   Day 5: Cardio
   Day 6: Yoga
Day 7: Rest or X Stretch

Saturday, May 1, 2010

Week 3, Day 6

Day 20
Kempo, and weigh-day.  I got up this morning and weighed myself right away.
 *Drum Roll*
283.5lbs. That's fifteen and one-half pounds in twenty days.  I'm excited, but I'm still very heavy, and still very much overweight.  Need to keep on "bringin' it" for the next 70 days!  1/5 of the way through!  I "dorked-out" and calculated the slope of my weight loss.  Right now it's a -.776 slope, which is insanely steep, according to that I would be 229.5lbs. by day 90.  Of course my weight loss is not going to be linear, if I had to guess it would be asymptotic.  I'm not sure how to calculate that though, I would need to ask someone way smarter than me.
Well pushing forward, I enjoyed the workout, although I'm a little sore.  Torched 805 calories in 58 minutes.  That's a little scary!  Food isn't going to be an issue today either, everything is already planned.  Chicken egg-white omelet for breakfast, whole wheat pasta and meatballs for lunch, and roasted veggies with baked chicken for dinner!  Not to mention, my favorite protein bars for snacks!

Helpful Tips

Fruit Smoothies
Blueberries, Bananas, Pineapple, Strawberries, Raspberries, Peaches and Blackberries.  (Experiment as you feel inspired, I have done mango and I am planning on trying Kiwi).  The tricky part is preparing the fruit into 4oz. portions, then combining those portions to form 16oz. portions.  After combining the portions together in a large ziplock back, I roll them up and store them in the freezer.  An example would look something like this.
Peach Raspberry Smoothie
8oz. of Canned Peach Chunks (drained)
  4oz. of Raspberries
  1 Banana (considered 4oz. portion)
Note: Make sure you peel the banana and break it in half before you freeze it.
In the morning, place the fruit in the microwave on auto-defrost for .4-.5lbs or 3.5-4 minutes.  Put the fruit in the blender, then add 4oz. of low-fat milk, and 4oz. of a delicious 100% fruit juice.  You can choose pomegranate, orange, cranberry, and or basically any kind of real juice that you think would be tasty.  After the fruit and liquids are combined in the blender, let it sit there for 15-20 minutes.  Then you are ready to blend.  Blend on low speed for 1-2 minutes.  Let sit for 1 minute, then blend it at a medium speed for 1 more minute, and serve immediately.
You can skip the entire process by just combining everything in the blender carafe the night before, and let it sit in the fridge for the night.  In the morning it'll be combined and thawed enough to just take it out of the fridge and start the blending process.
Note: If the liquid at the top isn't rotating toward the bottom, it may not be thawed enough (let it rest for 5 minutes and try again), or an air pocket might have developed from blending it too fast (turn it off and let the bubble rise to the surface then start again).

Chicken Bake
I can't tell you how great it has been to have pre-prepared chicken for the week.
Early in the week I buy my favorite brand of chicken tenderloins.  About 1-1.5 pounds worth.  Then I gather up some garlic, crushed red pepper flake, grill seasonings, salt, and pepper.  (You can do whatever you think might be tasty).  I combine all the spices and the chicken in a bowl and toss it until they are all thoroughly coated.  Then I put all the chicken in a pyrex dish and cook them in the oven 350 degrees for about 25-30 minutes.  I check it often making sure I don't over cook them.  If you're unsure just pull the dish out, and try and pull the chicken apart with a fork.  It should come apart easily and be tender and moist.  You can store the chicken in a plastic container in the fridge.
Now you can make delicious omelets, sandwiches, and salads all week long without having to worry about cooking the chicken anymore!

Turkey Bacon
Personally, I like the taste of Turkey Bacon better than regular bacon.  I'll probably catch a lot of grief for that, but at least understand that turkey bacon is significantly better for you.  It's like a tender thin piece of jerkey!  Try to find some decent quality turkey bacon in your local food store, there are some packages for like $0.60 for 100 pieces, just do yourself a favor and spend the $2.50 on some decent turkey bacon.
When you get home, don't even freeze the bacon, prepare a cookie sheet by spraying all natural cooking spray on it, placing a large piece of wax paper over the surface, then spray the wax paper with the cooking spray.  Line up your bacon strips so they overlap ever-so-slightly, pre-heat the oven to 375, and cook them for 20 minutes.
Wrap these bad boys in a plastic bag and store them in the fridge for the rest of the week!  Easy, easy, easy, great for all your sandwich and salad needs!  (Or you can sneak them into egg-white omelets like me!)

Week 3, Day 5

Day 19
Legs and Back, Abs.  I wasn't as ready to "bring it" as I should have been today.  But, somewhere between the "chair pose" and "reverse-grip pull-ups" I found my second wind.  At the end I maxed out my pull-ups at fourteen (with assistance from the chair of course), and I really felt the burn.  The only problem was I was so spent from the Legs and Back, the Ab exorcises that followed were embarrassing at best.  I really really struggled.  Sometimes only doing 2-3 out of 25 reps.  However, I was able to do twelve "pulse-ups" which is a new record for me (previously none).  Last time I was able to do 30/50 of the "mason twists," with a 20-break-break-10 method.  But today I did a break-break-20-break method and only managed a meager 20/50.  Hard not to feel defeated after such a defeating Ab Ripper workout, but I need to keep myself encouraged, because frankly, three and a half weeks ago I wasn't getting 10 minutes of exorcise a week - now I'm getting about 60 minutes per day.
Eating well, staying focused.  Last night made some whole wheat pasta and meatballs.  I avoided the grinder, and just stuck to a cup of pasta.  For breakfast today I had a frozen fruit smoothie and a "turkey bacon and parmesan cheese, egg-white-omelet."  Turkey bacon is great by the way!  Might have to thaw out the lean beef we bought and make some chili tonight.  Also, I need to prep the chicken for the rest of the week. Tomorrow is "weigh-day #2," I'm nervous and excited all at the same time.

Week 3, Day 4

Day 18
Yoga, yoga, yoga...  Man this exorcise is tough.  My wife actually skipped today because it's so daunting.  An hour a day is a tough squeeze in today's society, but an hour and a half may just be too much.  After the first 45 minutes I'm just about spent, then I look up and I see another 45 minutes to go!
Long day today, massive amounts of reports for school, don't feel like writing much more.  Two more days until weigh in.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Week 3, Day 3

Day 17
Shoulders, Arms, Abs today.  I had a lot of fun this morning, but I need to invest in a heavier band, because the one I'm using I don't really get the burn I need until 17-18 reps.  It was freezing in my house (like 52 degrees), so I decided to work out in sweats for the first time.  Once I broke a sweat I just took off my sweatshirt.  Abs were killer again, but I am getting better.  I can do much more "V-Ups" than I used to, I'm at about 8 now (previously 1-2).  I am struggling with the "pulse-ups," however.
I'm finding breakfast to be the hardest meal of the day for me to plan.  We go shopping tomorrow and I'm going to invest in some Turkey bacon, a carton of egg whites, some soy sausage, and a few red peppers.  See if that gets me through the week.  After day thirty I need to remember to do a (1/3) update.  Also I'm going to edit some of my first posts so I can post my pre-p90x weight and goals.  Also I am considering going to weekly updates, the main reason I haven't yet, is because daily blogging my progress keeps me motivated.

Week 3, Day 2

Day 16
Well, today was Cardio, and that means a hybrid of Yoga, Kempo, Plyometrics, and Core.  I love this day.  I think I would have no problem keeping up with the yoga part, except my feet burn from the pressure.  It's obviously my footwear (because I have flat-feet), they must not be giving me any support.  Nevertheless, about 700 calories this morning.
Food should be easy today, although I've already blown my breakfast.  I just inhaled a Protein Bar, and I ate it pretty late.  Which means snack is probably just going to be a couple tablespoons of peanut butter, and I'll have to swing something creative for lunch.  My wife and I are planning on watching Avatar and having a burrito for dinner.  Still worried I'm not losing weight, but I'm pushing forward.  I am planning on weighing myself again at Day 20.

Monday, April 26, 2010

Week 3, Day 1

Day 15
Core today.  Was brutal as usual.  I feel like I'm doing more of the exorcises now, and can really feel the difference throughout the day.  The program is tough, but for some reason I'm not as sore as I thought I'd be.  Perhaps I'm not trying hard enough.  Oh well...
Prep'd some chicken for more burritos, planning on having those some time this week.  Also, had a few drinks at the bar with a buddy of mine.  Just a little whiskey.  He tried to get me to have some hot wings, and although it is extremely tempting, I managed just to stick to a horseradish burger, no bun, no fries.

Saturday, April 24, 2010

Day Thirteen

Day 13
Well, well... Here I am at the end of two weeks.  At least all the workouts are done for this week.  I have to say this week went by much faster then the rest, and I'm far more sore than last week.  I'm posting early in the morning, because I don't foresee any problems in the food department today, and I'm so backed up with school work, I won't get around to it in the afternoon.
Kempo X, definitely one of my favorite workouts, it's high intensity, fast-paced, and really fun.  I burned a hair under 800 calories this morning!  And I only peeked out of my heart rate zone once, capping at 167.  (Those vertical punches are awesome).
Sticking to protein as usual, but I'm worried I'm not getting enough fiber.  I thought the insane amounts of lettuce I eat would be enough, but, I'm going to try and get some more from other things too.  Real-fruit smoothies, are the best things ever.  Natural Recovery Drink!
Might not post tomorrow, it's a rest day.  But if I do decide to try X Stretch, I will be sure to post.

Friday, April 23, 2010

Day Twelve

Day 12
Back and Legs, Ab Ripper.  Well, I prepared a little better this time around, since I knew the pull-ups were coming.  I used a chair to distribute some of my weight and went for max reps on the bar (instead of messing around with the band).  I think I pulled a muscle in my left elbow from over-compensating on the flip-grip pull-ups.  Either way it was a great workout, I am already really sore.  Looking for results is hard to find, but feeling them sure isn't.  Staying focused.

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Day Eleven

Day 11
Yoga...death.  I pushed myself to the limit, but I get the feeling the grunting and the collapsing isn't really a part of the tranquility of yoga.  This is probably the toughest workout on the list so far.  Although I imagine Plyometrics is a brute.  In any case, yoga killed me today.  I still can't balance my knees on my elbows or reach under my leg and grab my wrist behind my back yet, heck I may never be able to do that, but I felt the burn for the whole workout.  I skipped the "Ohmmmms" at the end, although I did relax in the lotus pose.
Food was tough today, because the cupboards are running dry, if you know what I mean.  Managed to think on our feet and make a Chicken Cobb Salad (no dressing), and scrounge up some meatballs.  Overall it was a pretty good day.

Day Ten

Day 10
Well, today was Shoulders and Arms, with some Ab ripper.  Ab Ripper X destroyed me, I think I'm getting worse at it.  There's just no hope for someone who is as overweight as I am, trying to crunch a fat stomach.  I tried with everything I had though.
Today's eating routine got really messed up.  I was in such a rush this morning to get the work outs done, I left for school without eating breakfast.  I stopped at a deli and got a steak wrap with pickles, lettuce, tomato, and hot peppers.  It was a dry sandwich, but it was so huge.  Managed to get it all over my jeans on the way to school.  I felt so guilty for having a huge breakfast the only thing I ate for the rest of the day was two protein bars.  Definitely failed today.
I also weighed myself, like a jerk.  Turns out I've lost 0.5 pounds.  Just great...

Day Nine

Day 9
Cardio today, figured out it's a mix of yoga, kempo, and plyometrics.  I did great on everything but the yoga.  My core strength is garbage.
Nailed the real-fruit smoothie recipe too.  Tasted great, and is really healthy.  1/10 through!

Day Eight

Day 8
"Core Synergistics" Round 2.  I think I did well this round, kept a steady pace, and fought for yardage.  I have a good plan for food today (except dinner - might have to come up with something on the fly).  Got a long day of school today, so I need to be sure to keep up my calories.

Steak and Romaine Salad
Decided to make a Steak and Romaine salad for dinner.  As I was cooking some Roast Beef in a pan I filled a small bowl with romaine lettuce, then I chopped half of a tomato up.  Combined, and topped with the beef.  Broke out my chopsticks again, and had a great meal.
My wife and I were impressed by the different things we're coming up with to eat.  At first eating healthy seemed like such a daunting task, but after a week or so, we're getting creative, and really start to enjoy eating right, and eating a variety of different foods.  "Better than just pasta every day!"- Tara.

Day Seven

Day 7
Nothing much to say.  Enjoyed a day of rest all around.  Tried the "Chicken Burrito" recipe in Nutrition Guide (with a few seasoning adjustments) for dinner, and it was a hit, I'll definitely do it again.  I didn't realize how much I was going to need the day off, until I woke up this morning.  All my muscles are in a mild burn, which I'm strangely comfortable with.  In fact, it makes me smile.
Avoided weighing myself today, I'm going to try and wait for day thirty.  I keep telling myself, the results will come.  I want to say I've noticed a difference in the thinness of my face, but... I could very well just be making that up.
Week 1 is over! 12 more to go!

Protein Bars
I just wanted to mention, that I've found the best protein bar outside of P90x-brand.  That's the CLIF Builder's© bars.  There are two kinds of CLIF© bars, they are the more rectangular, larger bar.  They have less carbs and more protein than the other kind, and they taste amazing.  I feel like I'm cheating on my diet when I eat one of these.

Day Six

Day 6
"Kempo," aka "Everything Hurts."  Ha!  Actually, I was looking forward to this Kempo workout since day 1, and it did not disappoint.  It was a full workout for sure!  I kept my rate in the zone, being careful not to push to far over the 165 limit, and other than resting to get it back down, I was able to keep up with all the exorcises.  As I said before, I did Tae Kwan Do kickboxing for a few months of my life, so this came naturally to me.
However, my wife was really struggling.  It was awkward for her, and because she wasn't able to get the timing down right away, she couldn't participate in some of the exorcises, this was very frustrating for her.  And frustration lead to discouragement, and she almost gave up the program entirely.  I know it's a fast paced workout, but I still wish they slowed it down and took everyone through each body motion to at least give beginners a chance to learn the right movements.  Later in the evening her and I walked through the whole workout slowly, pausing occasionally, so that I could demonstrate each move for her, and help her with technique and timing.  To be honest, it's really tricky, and I remember the first time I did Tae Kwan Do, it took me about two weeks (five times per week) to get the motions right.
Eventually, it just flows, I promise, and you'll feel the rhythm and you'll suddenly be able to step and punch in time.  "Do your best, and forget the rest!"  The kicks are nothing out of the ordinary, just need to focus on which way your chest is facing, and which way your face is looking.
Food went well today too.  Another day of nothing-but-water, and it feels so great.  Other great news is the coffee headaches are still gone, and I'm not really missing it at all.  I take pleasure in drinking good coffee, but I just haven't had a craving for it like I thought I would.  However, my body is still fighting me on carbohydrate withdrawal.  I doubt this would be a problem for a person who is in decent shape, however, I was a carb-aholic, and my body just isn't used to the serious switch.
That being said, I've still managed to keep to the one "Portion" of carbs per day.  And, I haven't been in lack of energy or focus.  Tomorrow is rest and I am looking forward to it!

Day Five

Day 5
Was a pretty smooth day.  I was just aching for a good work out, and "Legs and Back," and "Ab Ripper" delivered.  At first, I didn't realize that pull-ups were going to be considered part of the "back" exorcises, so I was unprepared.  I need to figure out a way to pin the band around something high above the floor, otherwise I won't be able to do exactly what they're doing.  I have the pull-up bar, but there's absolutely no way I can do even one pull-up, let alone ten like they're doing.  "Sneaky Lunges" are a favorite of mine, I really am starting to love the feeling of burning muscles.
I got sloppy with food today, and ate half of a chicken salad sandwich from Panera.  I tossed the bread, and realized that the chicken was in mayo.  For some reason I expected grilled chicken with lettuce.  Anyway, after that I had a few sausages and a protein bar.  The sausages were high in fat, which isn't very good, but at least I got some protein out of 'em.  I watched a P90x infomercial today too, and that really encouraged me!  I hope tomorrow's workout is crazy, I'm ready to "Bring it!"

Day Four

Day 4
One word, "Yoga."  This was the most frustrating one yet.  When I saw them go out of a "warrior one" pose, bend one arm around their back, than wrap the other arm through their leg and grab their first arm, I just about freaked out.  I have to admit it made me mad that they were in such amazing shape, and I am stuck here in such poor shape.  Nevertheless, I hung in there.  It was a long exorcise, about an hour and a half!  Throughout the whole thing, except for the cool-down breathing at the end, my heart rate was a steady 135-140.
Eating wasn't a problem either, although I was tempted to binge out on whatever was in the fridge.  Instead I just made a fresh-fruit smoothie.  It was sort of bland without the added sugar, but it might be that I'm not using the right combination of fruits.  Also, it was a lot of effort just to stem some minor stomach growling.
All in all, it was a pretty good day, I am discouraged when I look in the mirror and don't see results, but seriously it's only the fourth day!  In either case I feel great, and the Yoga really helped a lot with my flexibility throughout the day.

Day Three

Day 3
Felt really good this morning, my body is thanking me for eating right.  Water two days straight (soon to be a third), is making a difference I think.
Today was actually a combination of two different exorcise routines: "Shoulders, Arms" and "Ab Ripper."  I did great on the first exorcise regiment, but Ab Ripper destroyed me.  Out of 339 total possible reps, I did 114.  I can't do anything that requires a "V" shape, my gut just won't allow it.  Still grunted out a couple reps, giving it the best I could.  Concentrating on form and diet for now.  Mason Crossover's are death.
Had the most amazing lunch today, Cajun Turkey breast, lettuce, and two slices of pumpernickel, dry, with a small chunk of fresh pepperoni to chew on in between bites.  Typing that out now, I can see why that might not sound so good (I'm a little surprised myself) but it was fantastic.  Well 3 days down, 27 more to go!

Day Two

Day 2
Yesterday was the first day I drank nothing but water all day long, in over 5 years.  This morning I was groaning, but I slept very well last night.
Today was "Cardio," I did alright on the Kempo/Karate stuff because I used to do Tae Kwan Do kickboxing, and the rhythm just felt natural.  However, I have virtually no core strength, I suffered through the majority of those exorcises.  The "wacky jumping jacks" burn, I love 'em!  I was working out on my mat on top of carpet, and my feet still were under stress.  I might need to look into getting different footwear soon.  Also, my heart rate managed to peek at 174!
Diet was a blast today, broke out my chop sticks and had some baked chicken this morning.  Snacked on some protein bars and managed to limit my carbs to a single pita.  I came up with a great peppered-steak salad recipe for lunch, and had a couple of lean burgers with no bun for dinner.  Celebrating the small successes!

Day One

Day 1
Managed to wake up with eagerness today (which I was very thankful for).  Unfortunately I don't have a real DVD player, just a PS2, but it did the trick.  I skimmed through the CD booklet found "Core Synergistics" and started it up.
Saying I'm out of shape is an understatement.  I flat out embarrassed myself, but oh well, I did my best.  Legs are killing me, and my heart rate peeked at 164.  Other than my legs, I feel great.
Stuck to the diet today.  Turns out I am addicted to carbs, and my body was letting me know it.  I hope the carb cravings go away soon.  I picked a heck of a day to quit coffee.

Day Zero

Day 0
Believe it or not it took some time to prepare for this thing.  I thought for sure I could just dial a number, take advantage of the free express shipping, put on some shorts and plug&play.  Not so.  There's a lot of information to digest.

The Nutrition Guide
First thing I looked at was the "Nutrition Guide."  I spent about an hour going through this thoroughly.  I have to admit I originally thought I was just going to flip the pages and be done, but I soon found out I had a lot to learn about my body, and about the way I eat.
  • Maintaining a healthy diet is going to be the most important thing you need to understand before starting p90x.  Commit to it now.
The workout is intense, make no mistake, if your body is not properly fueled it will crash. (Like trying to fly an airplane that has just run out of fuel: first their will be a stall, then a decline, and finally an explosion.)  I have experienced what it's like to "under-eat," and it's scary when you body starts to shake and you start to shiver.

The Fitness Guide
Next, I went to the "Fitness Guide."  Honestly, my first look at this thing scared the crap out of me.  I almost pushed the whole workout to the side and said forget about it.  I thought: I have a nasty gut, and I'm heavier than I've ever been.  Therefore my reaction was: there's no way I can do this.  But I began to pray for strength and soon I was motivated enough to look through it.  I diagnosed my problems instead of dismissing them.
  • My Heart rate was high
  • I failed 3 parts of the Fitness Test (Pull-ups, sit-ups, and push-ups)
  • I had low self-esteem
Despite these flaws I pressed on, committing to the work that was ahead of me.

Equipment
Well you'll need it.  Just as I did.  I was on a pretty tight budget, so I couldn't get everything at once.  This left more room for discouragement, because I was itching to start the workout.  I had to purchase the following:
  • Heart-rate Monitor: $95
  • Work-out/Yoga Mat: $25
  • One Medium Strength Work-out Band: $15
  • One pair of Light Free Weights: $7
  • Food Scale: $40
  • Blender: $40
  • Pull-up Bar: $30
I didn't even get everything I needed.  So as I buy more things I will post a new equipment list.  The last thing I did was take my "day 0" pictures.  I am ashamed to post them, so we'll have to wait until I take the "day 91" photos to see 'em.

In total: my wife and I took three weeks to prepare for p90x.  We took our time, we thought things through, we planned ahead, we budgeted our money, we set-apart time on our schedules, we stocked our fridge with good food, and we prayed.

Time to "Bring it!"

Starting Statistics

Starting Stats
I should preface this by saying, I'm adding this post in around the middle of week three.  And I'm just doing this so I don't forget.
Weight: 299lbs
Pull Ups: 0
Push Ups: 6

Program
I'm doing the "Lean Workout Program," that's actually the version typically suited for women.  I can't tell you how embarrassing that is to hear.  Regardless, I'm just not in shape enough for the "Classic Version."  Here's the Workout regiment for week 1-3:
Day 1: Core Synergystics
Day 2: Cardio
Day 3: Shoulders and Arms, Ab Ripper
Day 4: Yoga
Day 5: Legs and Back, Ab Ripper
Day 6: Kempo
Day 7: Rest or Stretch
The workout changes slightly for week four, then its something completely different for weeks [5-7, 8], weeks [9-10, 11-12], and week [13] but I will post those changes in the corresponding weeks.
